U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

The USCIS is responsible for the administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication functions and establishing immigration services policies and priorities. USCIS processes all immigrant and non-immigrant benefits provided to visitors of the United States, including:

  • Family-based petitions - facilitating the process for close relatives to immigrate, gain permanent residency, work, etc.;

  • Employment-based petitions - facilitating the process for current and prospective employees to immigrate or stay in the U.S. temporarily;

  • Asylum and Refugee processing - adjudicating asylum and the processing of refugees;

  • Naturalization – approving citizenship of eligible persons who wish to become U.S. citizens;

  • Special status programs – adjudicating eligibility for U.S. immigration status as a form of humanitarian aid to foreign nationals;

  • Document issuance and renewal – including verification of eligibility, production and issuance of immigration documents.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs (CA) is a division of the DOS that administers laws, formulates regulations and implements policies relating to consular services and immigration. The CA website provides extensive Visa Information.

The Department of Labor fosters and promotes the welfare of the job seekers, wage earners, and retirees of the United States.

American Civil Liberties Union - Immigrant Rights

The Immigrants' Rights Project (IRP) of the American Civil Liberties Union works to defend the civil and constitutional rights of immigrants through a comprehensive program of impact litigation and public education.

National Immigration Law Center (NILC)

NILC has earned a national reputation as a leading expert on immigration, public benefits, and employment laws affecting immigrants and refugees. It is dedicated to protecting and promoting the rights of low income immigrants and their family members

National Immigration Forum

The National Immigration Forum is dedicated to embracing and upholding America’s tradition as a nation of immigrants. The Forum advocates and builds public support for public policies that welcome immigrants and refugees and are fair to and supportive of newcomers to our country.

Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois (HLAI)

HLAI is a not-for-profit corporation that was established in 1995. HLAI currently represents and serves the interests of approximately 300 attorneys, judges, and law students in the state of Illinois.
